Hey Russ, you are known for you're song writing and guitar shredding, namely RIKERS right now, but your tee shirt design turned out amazing, so do you find that art and music go hand in hand?

RD
I'd say visual art and music are completely different creative outlets for me. Music tends to be more of a stressful thing.. but stressful in a good way! whereas painting and such usually calls for a bottle of wine, solitude and my fav records spinning.

Your website is www.itsonlyrockandrollart.blogspot.com, how do you choose your subjects for you're pieces to paint?

It usually has to do with their historical importance in music. They're all hugely influential and still relevant to this day. It helps that for the most part they're all style icons as well.

I heard through the grapevine there will be a HUGE live event New Year's Eve, can you tell people about that?

New Years Eve should be a fun one! Mikey and Bryan's band 'The Lumberman' are playing as well as a fantastic young band called 'Meteor Empire' and my band Rikers have some shenanigans planned. It's all taking place at the Red Dog.

Here it is, the desert island question, what record would you have to have with you?

Hmmm. Thats really hard to say. I mean... would I actually have a record player? and electricity to boot?? I'd probably go with a DJ Ralph mixtape, or a Bowie record... 'Hunky Dory' maybe.

Hey Zach, heard you just got back from a European excursion, see any cool art over there?

I was in Sweden and Italy for a short while. In Milan I helped some of the students at an art school put some giant sunglasses in the middle of a piazza which was fun... I also checked out Michaelangelos last Pieta and that was amazing. I only saw Vodka in Sweden.

Any up and coming localish artists you know that the Flavour crew should check out?

I'd say listen to "Bullet" or "Skulls" . The romantic lyrics put me in the mood...

"so today i leaned over my desk and caught up with the infamous BRs-one for a quick convo on his Flavour artist series collab tee - hey BR, can you pass me the hole punch? ... You are more widely known for your photography, but when you do your graphic design pieces where do you find your inspiration?

BR:
Well aside from the beauty of nature & The Simpsons...I get a lot of inspiration from the internet actually, there is so much weird, awesome, artistic & hilarious stuff going on, on a day to day basis that I usually get an idea from seeing something really cool online. I love image sites like ffffound.com & tumblr.com

MW:
If you could teach someone about graphic design, what lesson is the most important for them to learn

BR:
I'd say don't wait on learning it in a class room. You can learn so much by just doing it. Acquire a copy of photoshop & get to it. There are lots of tutorials online, and if you're patient, they can really help. If you're passionate about what you do, it will show.

MW:
If any of the Flavour Posse wants to see more of your work, what's the best way for them to do that?

Wednesday, November 30th and we caught up with Lyall Brownlee, the foreman of the Beast Factory himself to find out more about his collaboration with Flavour.

Hey Lyall, you are a big supporter of the arts scene in Peterborough, so what's it looking like?

Peterborough has a lot of potential, there are a lot of great artists here and a lot of people working really hard to make great things happen. If we could just work on building a stronger network between artists and art fans to support camaraderie and collaboration and cobble together some alternative spaces to throw more local art happenings, we could have something that is seriously envied by other cities our size.

Your design is amazing for the Flavour collab, where do you find your inspiration for your creations?

Some of the most bizarre, seemingly out of this world looking creatures already exist right here on earth. I look at animals (humans included) and it blows my mind pondering the billions of incredible little things that have happened for them to have evolved to master their environment and appear the way they do, and how they may appear if they had evolved in some parallel universe. Science. The world is amazing, go look at it!

If the Flavour crowd wants to see more from Lyall Brownlee, how can they do that?

I will have 5 new prints up in the Electric City Art Lodge's Print Show and Sale opening at Artspace here in Peterborough on December 9. I'll have a few new paintings in Sleeping Giant Gallery's 'By the pound' show in Toronto in January. finally if you could have any 2 beasts battle it out who would they be? (for example Alien vs Predator, Godzilla vs King Kong, Rob Ford vs Dalton Mcguinty?)

I'm not one to use the word 'epic' lightly but I'd have to say that Gene Simmons battling a centaur in the octagon would be just that, and something that I would most definitely drop a few dollars on pay per view for. The centaur wielding a battle axe and Gene armed with nothing but a BC Rich warlock guitar, pyrotechnics and the power of rock.

We blogged about this a while back, well Nike has finally launched their Nike Air Mag shoe in LA. Better known as the Marty McFly shoes from Back to the Future 2. These look ridiculous, and I'd (personally) never wear them...but hey to each their own. I'd still however buy them to put up on my wall! Not sure on the cost yet...but I'm sure they wont be as cheap as a pair of dunks. :) Props to NIKE for the amazing marketing & photos.

We, as many know like to shoot from the hip when it comes to these things...so all mini comps ie: skate, manual comp etc will be announced the day of & everyone will get their chance lay it on the line.

This year the city is enforcing a helmet law for all skaters. We understand that most of you guys don't usually wear helmets - but here is the thing...they actually DO work saving you from brain damage. The other thing is neither us or you have a choice to not wear one if you choose to compete. Sorry our hands are tied. We love you & appreciate your understanding of the matter. At the end of the day though, we really should be promoting safety for the sport because we want our city to take it seriously & we want everyone - our friends & family to not get hurt. Sure scars are cool & chicks dig them...but becoming a vegetable because you were too proud or too cool to not protect yourself is kind of dumb. Thanks again for understanding! <3

BIG thanks to everyone who came out for Go Skateboarding day, Tuesday at the Peterborough skate park. Thanks to Elliot Powell at West 49 for being super rad, organizing the games throughout the day, handing out prizes, and hanging with me in the blazing sun - it was an amazing day with wicked weather. If you missed this....You messed up big time!

We had our boy DJ Who spinning records, Art Space had graffiti artists from Toronto on the scene painting murals, and of course so much rad skateboarding. There is so much talent in this town it's insane! Highest Ollie was a draw at 8 decks stacked that sent Chris Bishop and Dave Rider home with a prize pack from Ultimate skateboard distribution.

Again thank you everyone for coming out and supporting "go skateboarding" day. Don't forget we will be holding a skate contest with the dudes from Vans and Levis, August 13th on Hunter St. right beside Flavour. Friday June 10th was the Official Nixon Pop Up Shop launch party!! It went off right at 7 and stayed wicked all night long.
